Hi, my name is Charlie Stewart and I like two things: movies and soccer*, and I’m especially fascinated with how the two interact. Mainstream cinema has always included sports films because they tell natural stories- there’s a defined conflict, a villain you can root against, and a natural emotional component for the main characters. We relate to these characters because our struggles mirror their own, and often we’ve played the sport depicted in the film, or a similar competitive endeavor.
I wanted to make the Soccer Cinema Podcast to explore the specific places where two of my favorite interests lie, and to see how different national cinemas explore their relation to the beautiful game. The first season will explore how Hollywood and other American filmmakers have explored soccer in the movies- followed by a deep dive on the Goal! trilogy, following by discussing how football is portrayed in its homeland of the British Isles.
Keep checking out this space for updates, including writings, streams, and eventually the show! We look forward to sharing the world of soccer cinema with you!
*Yes, you can call it Soccer, and it means the same exact thing. I’m not standing down on this one.
